Thomas Edison (1847 – 1931, 84 years) is definitely a famous inventor during the last 150 years well known for developing the phonograph, the motion picture camera and the electric light globe. Edison amassed a record 1,093 patents for his developments, inventions and business ventures which have made him famous several times over. Even over 70 years past his passing we all still know who Thomas Edison is, and some of his “inventions”. But it has come to light (pardon the pun) that Edison didn’t completelly invent some things we think he did like the light bulb. He took that concept others came up with of using electricity to produce light energy. But them he improved it through rigirous testing until he discovered a wire in a vacuum would work best. So Thomas Edison was famous also for taking existing ideas and working on them until they were perfected. You see he was also a clever businessman. Edison was in rival with George Westinghouse. They both had developed rival electrical current technologies, with Edison inventing DC current and Tesla with his AC current. Edison become famous for his shocking demonstrations of the dangers of the rival AC current. Edison was also at odds with another electrical energy pioneer and inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, physicist, and futurist Serbian American called Nikola Tesla. The public rivalry also extended to their differing philodsophies for electricity. Edison was very much n favour of the commercialisation whereas Tesla wanted electrical energy to be freely available for everyone. So let’s look at the things that made Thomas Edison famous.
